This self portrait depicts the artist standing behind his easel and the wood panel or canvas he will paint on. In each hand he is holding a small scalpel-like brush dipped in red. The canvas has been painted black and the only paint that has been applied is a large red “X”. The background is swirling and even covers some of the artist’s head and easel. Curiously, the easel resembles a cross. His mouth and eyes are wide open as he observes the tyranny, lies and oppression sweeping the land.
I am doing my best to interpret the age and society I live in through art. I have included titles and descriptions, but how you interpret what you see may very well be different from mine.
