This self portrait depicts the artist wrapped and protected in a white cloak with only a part of his face and head exposed. From the left of the drawing the light is spilling into the darkness behind attacking and devouring the emptiness. It appears he is using the white cloak and light as a shield and armor against the evil in the darkness. The look in his eyes & expression on his face indicates that he is concentrating on something very intently, but exactly what that is we can not tell for certain.
I am doing my best to interpret the age and society I live in through art. I have included titles and descriptions, but how you interpret what you see may very well be different from mine.
